Jackie & Tom Hugdahl as the "Sprits" of Nancy & John Moffat

The Historical Society will hold a Cemetery Walk on Saturday, June 1, 2013 (as part of the annual Yellowstone Trail Heritage Day).  We are seeking actors to portray “Spirits,” choir members for the Pearly Gate Singers, guides, ticket sales, and setup volunteers.

Actors are needed to portray the “Sprits” of former Hudson residents at their gravesites. Scripts will be provided and the actors will be required to memorize a 5 to 10 minute soliloquy.

The performance will take place outside at the Willow River Cemetery in Hudson, between noon and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1st.

Tour guides (“Guidian Angels”) will escort guests to the gravesites and where actors will share the life stories of their “Sprit.”  Tour groups are expected every half hour. In the event of rain the performance will likely be moved inside.

Adult men and women are needed to play the parts of the “Spirits” and teens or adults are need as guides. The guides will walk during much of the event time.

Singers are needed for an a cappella choir “The Pearly Gate Singers” who will be singing old funeral hymns as part of the walk. The choir will hold practices in May.

Volunteers of all levels of ability are welcome. Training provided.

Anyone interested in helping with the Cemetery Walk (or learning more) please contact Jacki Bradham at 715-386-3826 or rbradham@pressenter.com.

Event Looks to Bring Autism Awareness and Raise Funds for Music Therapy Partnership

Students in Tracy Johnson's CID program display a quilt that was donated for the silent auction

The public is invited to join the Willow River Elementary CID program in raising awareness of autism spectrum disorders and celebrating people who live with autism this Saturday, April 6.  Within the past couple of weeks, a health survey done by the government found that 1 in 50 school-age children are affected with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).  While this statistic does not does not replace the CDC’s official estimate of 1 in 88 children, it does show that it may be an underestimate.  Autism is a complex developmental disability that affects an individual’s ability to communicate and interact with others socially. The set of behaviors which define autism spectrum disorders manifest themselves differently in each individual affected.  At this time, there is no known single cause for autism.

The Willow River CID program provides many opportunities to learn a wide range of life skills for students with autism such as, academic content, social skills, daily living skills, problem solving skills and self-advocacy.   During the last 5 years, the program has partnered with MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis, MN to provide music therapy for the students in the program.  Music therapy has become an increasingly popular strategy for teaching children with autism. Through the therapy students show benefits in the domains of, communication, cognition, social interaction, sensory integration and motor skills.  Music therapy has been found to help initiate and cue speech for kids who have difficulty making speech sounds, making it popular for students with autism spectrum disorders.  Music also provides rhythm, which makes speech more predictable for children with autism.

The Celebrate Difference Event, being held Saturday, April 6 2013, will serve not only as an opportunity to raise autism awareness, but will also serve as a fundraiser for the Willow River CID program’s partnership with MacPhail Center for Music.  At 10:00, there is a 5K fun run/walk that extends from Willow River Elementary, along the St. Croix River, to the end of the dike, and ends back at the school.  If you wish to participate in the 5K Fun Run/Walk, you may register the morning of the race beginning at 8:30.  The cost of the race is $15.00 and includes a t-shirt (not guaranteed on the day of the race with same-day registration).

Also, beginning at 10:00, there will be a free, open-to-the-public, carnival taking place at Willow River Elementary School. In addition to carnival games and activities, there will be a silent auction with many fantastic items to bid on.  Items available include:  a hand-sewn autism quilt, a signed football from the Green Bay Packers, a family tent for 6, gift baskets, a cake, and many other items.  At 11:00 and 12:30, we will have a guest speaker and her family speaking about their experiences of living with autism.

If you have any questions about the 5K or Carnival or would like to pre-register for the 5K Run/Walk, please email Tracy Johnson at johnsotrl@hudson.k12.wi.us.

New series on the subject of work starts this weekend at local church

New series on work starts this weekend at Faith Community Church in Hudson.

Whether in the workplace, at home, or on the road commuting, Hudson area residents dedicate a significant chunk of time each week to work-related activities. A recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report states that the average American employee works nearly 35 hours a week.  For individuals traveling to a workplace from Hudson each day, they add a typical 50-minute round-trip commute to their day (source: U.S. Census Bureau). Homemakers work numerous hours each week fulfilling a variety of roles, including chef, house cleaner, child care, driver, laundry service and lawn maintenance, with “an endless amount of demands and to-dos" (source: MintLife blog, Mint.com).

Tim Porter, Lead Pastor for the Mission of Faith Community Church, takes on the topic of work this weekend in a new sermon series entitled, “Redeeming Jobs.” The series is a breakout of the “One” series, examining the Bible’s book of Ephesians, which began in January.

“A misconception is that Christianity is just about one day a week or that God is only about saving the soul while neglecting the rest of life,” Porter said. “The Bible gives a realistic and robust view of the goodness and frustration of work.”

Through “Redeeming Jobs,” Porter will approach the biblical perspective of work in a manner similar to the popular cable TV show, “Dirty Jobs.” “Redeeming Jobs” will develop the connection from Sunday to Monday and how we live out Christianity in the work we do in our every day lives. Along with the Bible, Porter will draw examples from popular books on the subject, such as Tim Keller’s “Every Good Endeavor” and R. Paul Stevens’, “Work Matters.”

“Just as the God of the Bible is a working God, he made humans in his image to work as well,” Porter said. “One of the easiest ways to love our neighbors is to do our work with competence and integrity, no matter how mundane the task may be. There is dignity in all work.”

“Redeeming Jobs” starts this Sunday, April 14, at FCC’s two worship gathering services held at 9 and 11 a.m. at 777 Carmichael Road.

About Faith Community Church

Faith Community Church is located at 777 Carmichael Road in Hudson and offers worship gatherings at 9 and 11 a.m. on Sundays. FCC’s purpose is to glorify God and is on mission to make more and better disciples of Christ. All are welcome. To learn more, visit www.fcchudson.com.

Conversations About Breast Health Can Save Lives

$

This Op-Ed is from Nikki Panico, executive director of the Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

I’m no stranger to breast cancer. My mother and aunt both lost their fights with breast cancer … within a month of each other. And, seven months later, at age 39, I myself was diagnosed with breast cancer during my yearly checkup – a routine mammogram.

I had stage 2 breast cancer.

I know how devastating breast cancer is. I know how devastating it can be for families. My experience with breast cancer inspired me to make a difference, first by raising money and participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day in Philadelphia, then becoming involved with the Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure after I moved to the Milwaukee area. I’ve been a co-chair of the Race for the Cure since 2011, and now I’m the new executive director of the Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate.

Mammograms save lives. And that’s why I’m proud to be part of an organization that inspires women to get screened.

This year, the Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Kohl’s Cares are continuing Kohl’s Conversations for the Cure, a successful educational program now in its third year. The program encourages women to get age appropriate breast health screenings, and to open the lines of communication on breast health and talk to each other about the importance of breast self awareness, with the ultimate goal of increasing survival rates here in southeast Wisconsin. In the last three years, 713 conversations were held and approximately 5,750 women were reached.

Conversations with loved ones should take place throughout the year, not just during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – because one conversation can save a life. An estimated 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States this year. It’s time to inspire women to take action – by getting their mammograms, finding breast cancer early and beating it.

I’m living proof that mammograms save lives.
