The Xcel Energy Community Conservation Program (CCP) is in its 11th year of helping residents and small businesses identify energy efficiency improvements. The program, which has been offered in several counties in northern and western Wisconsin over the decade, is focusing efforts on residential and small business customers in St. Croix, Barron and Washburn counties through Dec. 31, 2013. Xcel Energy’s CCP is partnering with Focus on Energy to offer four new energy efficiency packages.

Residential Customers
The free Express Energy Efficiency Program helps homeowners in the selected counties take the first step in reducing their energy usage by having an energy professional install free energy-saving products, such as faucet aerators, compact florescent lights and low-flow showerheads at no cost to the homeowner.

St. Croix County residential customers can also take advantage of a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Assessment for only $45 (A $350 value). An energy consultant will complete a thorough evaluation of the home utilizing the blower door test, infrared scan and combustion test. The homeowner will receive a detailed report with recommendations for energy efficiency improvements. Projects completed by the end of the year and verified in a post-performance assessment are eligible for incentives from both Xcel Energy and Focus on Energy, which can cover up to 66 percent of the equipment cost.

Small Business Customers
A Free Energy Savings Package for small businesses in the selected counties includes installation of several energy-saving measures.

The Gold Energy Savings Package for small business in the selected counties is also available for $129 and includes everything in the Free Energy Savings Package plus installation of even more energy-saving measures, such as unlimited pipe wrap and 42-watt compact fluorescent bulbs.

Eligible small business participants can receive cash back from Focus on Energy and matching incentives (up to $5,000) from Xcel Energy for implementing energy-efficient improvements.

To learn more about the residential programs and schedule an appointment, call 1-855-533-8103. For more information about the small business options, call 1-877-229-6678.

Kevin Frane, President, United Gear & Assembly

The Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau is pleased to announce the addition of three new Board of Directors members serving 3-year terms that began in January: Kevin Frane, United Gear & Assembly, Inc., Todd Gilbert, Valley Cartage, and Nick Vivan, Eckberg, Lammers, Briggs, Wolff & Vierling, P.L.L.P.

Kevin Frane, President, United Gear & Assembly

In February 2010 Kevin joined United Gear as the Vice President of Operations.  In January 2011 Kevin was promoted to the position of President. United Gear, employer of approximately 250 people, manufactures gears, shafts and other components used in many agricultural and off road applications.

Kevin has worked in manufacturing for the past 17 years. Prior to United Gear he worked for Greenheck Fan Corporation. While at Greenheck Kevin held the positions of Engineer, Shipping Supervisor, and Operations Manager. As an Operations Manager Kevin led and managed a greenfield start project near Charlotte North Carolina where he spent the five years prior to moving back to Wisconsin with his wife and teenage daughter.

While in North Carolina Kevin served on the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and was the acting Board Chair. In this role he worked closely with Economic Business Development as well as the other county and state divisions.  He also served on other boards that were closely tied to education, arts, and businesses.

Todd M. Gilbert, President & CEO of Valley Cartage

As a third generation Gilbert in the family business that was started by Todd’s Grandfather Norman in 1935 he calls himself extremely lucky to be able to work side by side with his father Jerry since 1993.  As the business has grown, the duties have changed for Todd who was taught the industry from the ground up.  Today his role consists of leading, developing, visioning and working directly with a leadership team that supports the entire organization.

Todd has played a key role with the rapid expansion of the business which has gone from 4 employees in 1993 to over 230 in 2012.  Growth has come through hard work and dedication in addition to servicing the customer as rule number 1.  By adding key vendors and partners early on in Todd’s career these long term relationships have been one of the significant advantages for the steady growth.  Investing back into the family business with the belief of leaving the organization better for the next generation is a driving force in all of the company’s strategic plans.

Growing up Todd also watched his Grandpa and Father blazed their way with community service and Todd is trying to keep these family values alive by also being a Board Member of the First Tee Program located in St Croix County, coaching football for the Hudson Boosters and Middle School programs, former member of the Hudson Hockey Association and on the business side is a board member of the Minnesota Trucking Association.

Todd is married to Heidi and they have three boys, Brandon 12, Blake 10 and Brady 7.

Nick Vivian, Partner, Eckberg, Lammers, Briggs, Wolff & Vierling, PLLP

Nick joined Eckberg Lammers in 2006 where he chairs both the Financial Institutions and Business Transactions practice groups.  He has the privilege of leading an exceptionally talented team of experienced banking, finance and corporate attorneys, paralegals and assistants representing community and regional financial institutions in drafting complex loan documents, addressing troubled assets, collections, foreclosures and loan work outs. Additionally, Nick provides sophisticated counsel to start-up and emerging businesses in Minnesota and Wisconsin.  He also serves as the City Attorney to the Minnesota communities of Grant and Scandia.

In addition to serving on the Hudson Chamber Board of Directors, Nick also serves as a Director for St. Croix Therapy, is a member of the Hudson Daybreak Rotary and is the Chair of the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Finance Committee.  In the past, Nick has also served on the Board for the New Richmond Youth Hockey Association and has coached youth hockey.

Nick and his wife Karen are residents of North Hudson and have three young boys –Grant, Koltan and Landon.

“The Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau is fortunate to have such accomplished individuals joining its Board of Directors," said Chamber President Kim Heinemann. "The experience and knowledge of each of these new Board Members will provide new perspectives and leadership for our organization.

The following Board members will continue to serve in 2013: Jim Wookey, WESTconsin Credit Union as Board Chair;  LouAnne Berg, J & L Steel & Electrical Services/Ascent Companiesas Board Past Chair; Traci Leffner,Sylvan Learning Center as Board Chair Elect, Pat Cooksey, Hudson Hospital & Clinicsas Board Treasurer; Kevin Blinsmon, Hiawatha National Bank; Brian Hinz, Elliot Architects, LLC; Sandee Madigan, Elan Clothing & Gifts/Dilly-Dally Gift Shoppe; and Carla Timmerman, Hudson House Grand Hotel.

Lommen Abdo Ranked Tier 1 "Best Law Firm"

U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers has released the 2013 "Best Law Firms" rankings and Lommen Abdo is included in the top tiers. Lommen Abdo’s Appellate and Legal Malpractice practices were included in the Minneapolis Metropolitan Tier 1 Rankings, the top level rankings. Lommen Abdo’s Appellate Practice was also rated highly in the national rankings. Also recognized in the Minneapolis Metropolitan area were Lommen Abdo’s practices in Personal Injury Litigation and Corporate Law. The rankings in their entirety are posted online at http://bestlawfirms.usnews.com.

The 2013 "Best Law Firms" rankings provide a comprehensive view of the U.S. legal profession that is unprecedented both in the range of firms represented and in the range of qualitative and quantitative data used to develop the rankings.

The third edition of these rankings features law firms given consistently impressive performance ratings by clients and peers. Achieving a high ranking is a special distinction that signals a unique combination of excellence and breadth of expertise.

The rankings, presented in tiers, showcase more than 10,000 law firms ranked nationally or by metropolitan region. Firms were ranked nationally in one or more of 80 legal practice areas and by metro or state in 118 practice areas. One "Law Firm of the Year" is named in 79 of the nationally ranked practice areas.

The mission of "Best Law Firms" is to help guide referring lawyers and clients – from the country’s largest companies requiring corporate legal advice to individuals seeking counsel regarding personal legal issues.

"The ‘Best Law Firms’ rankings are now in their third year, and the reaction to the rankings from the legal profession and from legal clients continues to be very gratifying," says Steven Naifeh, president of Best Lawyers. "Because we combine hard data with peer reviews and client assessments, more and more clients inform us that ours are the most thorough, accurate and helpful rankings of law firms ever developed."

The national first-tier rankings will be featured in U.S. News & World Report’s Money issue, on newsstands November 20, 2012. The national and metropolitan first-tier rankings are featured in the "Best Law Firms" stand-alone publication, which is being distributed to more than 30,000 general counsel and in digital format to more than 60,000 private practice lawyers worldwide.

"U.S. News has more than two decades of experience in providing the public with the most accurate and in-depth rankings of a wide range of institutions, including our Best Law Schools rankings," says Tim Smart, Executive Editor of U.S. News & World Report. "Law firms are an integral part of our rankings and a natural accompaniment to the law schools rankings."

Tips for a Heart Healthy Lifestyle in Honor of American Heart Month

$

0

Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States and in the world, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). Oftentimes thought of as a “man’s disease,” heart disease is also the leading cause of death for women in the United States – accounting for one in every four female deaths in 2009 as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The silver lining is that living a healthier lifestyle is only a few good choices away. In celebration of American Heart Month in February, Maid Brigade – the nation’s residential cleaning leader – shares simple ways to maintain a “heart healthy” lifestyle.

Get informed An AHA survey of U.S. adults found that most people don’t connect important risk factors, such as poor diet and physical inactivity, with heart disease and stroke. It’s important to educate yourself on risk factors and also new health information that becomes available. For example, recent studies have found that unlike men, whose main symptom for heart attacks is chest pain, symptoms of a heart attack among women can include: light-headedness, unusual shortness of breath, unusual fatigue/weakness, sharp pain in the next, back, shoulder blade, or jaw, cold sweats, and nausea.

Stay active Nearly 70% of Americans do not get the physical activity they need, as found by the AHA. Daily physical activity adds years on to your life and increases your overall quality of life. Strive for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day, five times per week. This lowers your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. In addition to the health benefits, physically active people nearly always report improved moods, increased energy, decreased stress, and a more positive outlook on life. For women especially – whose mental stress and depression affect their hearts more than men’s according to findings from the Mayo Clinic – living an active lifestyle is crucial.

Eat right A proper diet is one of the best offenses for fighting cardiovascular disease. To get started, increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, eat plenty of whole grains and legumes, and reduce your intake of fatty foods. The AHA reports that a “heart healthy” diet consists of foods low in saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, sodium and added sugars, and foods high in whole grain fiber, lean protein, and a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables.

Carve out “me time” You’re not alone – the majority of Americans, and women especially, feel over-scheduled and over-burdened. It’s important though to take time out of your busy day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Consider delegating some of your household responsibilities to service providers like professional organizers, cleaners, grocery delivery services, babysitters, and others that free up valuable time to get in your daily exercise, effectively cope with stress, and inspire you to make the time to get healthy.

“It’s up to us and only us to make our health a priority over life’s other demands. Thankfully, by making a few lifestyle changes, we are also the cure for heart disease," says Ellen Hoffman, owner of Maid Brigade of Milwaukee.

Maid Brigade is encouraging you to get healthy in honor of American Heart Month. Throughout the month of February, share your “heart healthy” tips with us at facebook.com/maidbrigade or @maidbrigade. One lucky winner will receive a free green house cleaning from his/her local Maid Brigade valued at $150!”

Local Church Moves Office and Training Center to New Location

Faith Community Church (FCC) has moved its office to 944 Carmichael Road in Hudson – the former Central Bank location. This location will serve as both a temporary church office, as well as a training center in support of the church’s mission of discipleship. The new FCC Office and Training Center is conveniently located near the church’s main facility, which is just about a block away at 777 Carmichael Road.

In the past few years, FCC’s ministries and outreach to the community have grown.

“We are blessed by the many ways we can serve the St. Croix Valley,” Tim Porter, Pastor for the Mission of FCC, said. “If you drive by FCC any day of the week, you’ll find the parking lot full of cars. We are beyond the capacity of our current facility to meet the needs of our ministry.”

The new FCC Office & Training Center at 944 Carmichael offers two areas for meeting and training space.

“We look forward to adding adult discipleship classes to meet in these spaces,” Porter said.

In support of the growth in its ministries, FCC added a Pastor for Missional Community and other staff roles in the past year. FCC’s pastors and staff began working from the location at 944 Carmichael on Monday, Feb. 11.

“For several months, we have had pastors and staff working where we could fit them in, such as the sound booth, conference rooms and even local coffee shops. We’re excited about the opportunity this move provides to have the pastors and staff working in proximity to one another,” Porter said. “We believe this will enhance the team’s collaboration, cohesiveness and communication as we work together on mission to make more and better disciples of Jesus Christ.”

At the church’s annual meeting in January, a proposed building expansion plan was introduced to its membership.

“We plan to expand FCC’s facility at 777 Carmichael, so we are better equipped with the space needed to support our mission,” Porter explained. “Moving the office staff to a temporary location means the church building will be prepared for the construction phase of the facility expansion project when we are ready for that step in the process.”

Office hours at the FCC Office and Training Center remain the same of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. To reach the FCC Office & Training Center by phone, please call 715-386-4070.

Local Thrivent Financial representative receives long-term care designation

Tracy Berglund is now Certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC)

Hudson,
WI
 –Tracy Berglund,
Financial Representative, FIC, CLTC with
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has been awarded a professional designation in
the field of long-term care, Certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC). The program is
independent of the insurance industry and focuses on providing financial
service professionals the tools needed to meet their client’s long-term care
needs.

The Certified in
Long-Term Care program is the long-term care insurance industry's only
independent professional designation. Created in 1999, the course is focused on
the field of long-term care planning and provides legal, accounting, insurance
and financial service professionals the critical tools necessary to address the
subject matter with their middle-age clients.

The goal of the designation is to teach
financial professionals how to create a plan that preserves the emotional,
physical, and financial well-being of a client's family should care be
necessary. Once established, options to fund that plan, including, Medicare,
Medicaid, the Veterans Administration, self-funding and long-term care
insurance, are reviewed and recommended where appropriate.

“I strive to provide clients with a financial
strategy that meets their needs,” said Tracy Berglund. “My ability to do that
well depends on my understanding of their unique situation,” Tracy Berglund
explained.

Participants are provided the
information and training needed to offer guidance to families on a range of
issues including home care, assisted living, nursing homes, social services,
and most importantly, establishing a plan for what will pay for these
resources. Ensuring that retirement assets are protected
is a primary focus of long-term care conversations, and a long-term care plan
of action should be a part of every retirement strategy.

“It is my responsibility to help people
understand the emotional, physical and financial consequences associated with
providing or paying for care over an extended period of time. It is essential
they have this information so they can take action to protect those they love
while they have options. I am committed to helping my clients create an
appropriate plan to meet their specific needs,” said Tracy Berglund.

Berglund, FIC, CLTC.  She has offices at
